Secure before repairing
A repair locks attention onto an interface beside a loud, valuable object. Observe roads, windows, ridges, trees, and infected first. Move loose parts only after choosing cover and an exit. If the vehicle appears staged or recently used, assume another player may return.
Do not begin because one part is available. Inspect the whole vehicle and decide whether you can restore movement, protection, and enough fuel for a safe route.
Component inspection
Community guides commonly distinguish body or hull, engine, tires, fuel tank/system, glass, fuel, and model-specific components. Read the current interaction panel because labels and requirements can change. Record condition without assuming that a visually present part is healthy.
Repair priority
Restore the component that prevents safe basic movement first, then protection and route range. The exact order depends on the model and visible condition. Do not spend a limited repair kit on a minor issue while a critical component remains missing.
Official February 20, 2026 notes explain hull protection: the body shields occupants while hull health is above 25 percent. Below that point, occupants begin receiving a portion of base damage, scaling toward full damage as hull reaches zero. Use the live display as final and repair a critically damaged hull before treating the vehicle as cover.
Exact kit amount and tool bonus are not asserted because they require current testing.
Find and carry parts
Search vehicle-oriented containers, industrial/service areas, existing vehicle sites, events, and other current sources. Record source family and map rather than a guaranteed pin. A component may fit only a certain vehicle role or system; read the live compatibility prompt.
Parts consume inventory that could hold healing, food, or ammunition. Carry them when you have a specific vehicle plan. For a group, distribute critical supplies so the person transporting every part is not also the only medic.
Use Containers for source tracking and Vehicle Locations for search zones.
Staged repair process
- Observe and clear only necessary threats.
- Inspect every current component and fuel state.
- Move the vehicle plan and spare parts into cover where possible.
- Restore basic movement with compatible parts or kits.
- Restore body protection appropriate to the route.
- Add enough fuel for destination and fallback.
- Start and test at low speed in open space.
- Stop, recheck condition and controls, load supplies, and leave promptly.
If the test reveals poor steering, missing protection, or a control you cannot use, stop before entering traffic.
Damage and cover decisions
A vehicle can move while remaining dangerous to occupy. Read body condition and avoid sitting stationary under fire. Engines and repair activity reveal position. If contact begins, decide whether transport, temporary hard geometry, or abandoning the vehicle best protects the character.
Do not chase repairs during active fire. Move to cover or disengage. A vehicle is replaceable; the character and information may be more valuable.
Platform controls
Verify entry, exit, driver seat, storage, lights, horn, handbrake, and stopping on the current platform. Community PC bindings are leads only. The August 2026 update changed storage transfer and handbrake behavior, so older control videos may be stale.
Record and verify
Document model, map, component states, item used, before/after result, repair amount observed, fuel, platform, and date. Repeat before publishing a precise value. Separate official hull behavior from community repair assumptions.
Verification status
Repairable vehicles, parts, and hull-protection behavior are official. Component categories use current community practice. Exact requirements, kit amounts, tool bonuses, damage, compatibility, and controls require live checks. Last reviewed September 18, 2026.
Abort conditions
Stop the repair when another player controls the approach, infected surround the work area, fuel cannot support an exit, a required movement component is unavailable, or the vehicle’s body condition makes the planned crossing unsafe. Move already-carried critical supplies back to the character before leaving. Do not remain exposed merely because several repair items were invested; sunk resources do not make the next action safer. Mark the vehicle and component need for a later prepared run only if returning does not create an obvious ambush pattern.
