Carry a function
Utilities are valuable when they solve a route problem: seeing, observing, navigating, concealing, receiving information, interacting, or moving. The official experience confirms utilities as loot. Community catalogs identify categories, but exact slot count, effect, activation, stacking, and source require the current interface.
Ask what the utility changes before keeping it. An impressive tool with no upcoming use competes with food, healing, ammunition, and empty space.
Function lookup
Map and compass changes
The July 2025 Beta release made the map and compass default and added map ping. Older guides that describe acquiring basic navigation tools may be outdated. Learn map open/close, zoom, ping, and compass reading through current prompts. Use them from cover because a map blocks awareness.
Agree on ping meaning with teammates. A marker can mean destination, enemy, route warning, or rally; the interface does not create shared intent automatically.
Radio and event awareness
The Covert Militia Radio was added in the 2026 Drying update alongside changes to events, containers, infected, and vehicles. This confirms a historical utility addition. Its current source, slot, availability, signal meanings, and relationship to ordinary random events need a live check.
Do not treat every sound or community-described signal as official. Record the current item description, event state, observed cue, location context, and outcome. One signal does not establish a complete event map.
Use Random Events for temporary-scene decisions and Seasonal Events for availability history.
Light and observation choices
A light can make an interior readable while announcing presence through windows or doors. Activate it only when its information value exceeds the visibility cost. Test the current control and beam behavior away from traffic.
Observation tools support reconnaissance from cover. Scan entrances, roads, vehicles, ridges, and infected behavior before moving. Do not remain silhouetted while looking through an optic. Keep awareness of the immediate area and have an exit.
Exact range, magnification, battery behavior, or detection effect needs current testing; do not import real-world assumptions.
Slot and stacking checks
Community references describe utility slots, but counts and restrictions can change. Inspect the current character/inventory interface. Equip one item, confirm its slot, then test another without risking a critical item. Record whether effects coexist, replace each other, or require manual activation.
Do not claim stacking from icons alone. Use one controlled variable and a visible result. On controller and mobile, confirm the activation prompt is accessible before relying on it.
Inventory and group roles
Carry the utility for the next route. A vehicle trip may justify navigation or event information. A night interior may justify light. A group can distribute observation, radio, and other roles rather than duplicate everything. Keep immediate healing and supported ammunition first.
After an update, remove tools whose workflow was replaced. The August 2026 ammunition update removed older loading tools, so legacy utility lists may include functions no longer needed.
Record and verify
For each utility record exact name, function category, slot, activation, displayed effect, observed effect, source, map, event state, availability, platform control, and last checked date. Leave numerical range, duration, bonuses, and stacking blank until tested.
Search by source type and use Containers rather than guaranteeing a pixel. One observed utility establishes possibility only.
Verification status
Utilities, default navigation tools, ping, the radio addition, and removal of loading tools are supported by official sources. Category and slot leads use community references. Current roster, slots, controls, effects, stacking, sources, and signals require live checks. Last reviewed September 18, 2026.
